The Parachute Wedding Dress

Yep, this wedding dress was made from a nylon World War II parachute.

Maj. Claude Hensinger (A B-29 pilot) proposed to his girlfriend in 1947, offering this life-saving military gear as the material for her wedding gown...

From the Smithsonian Museum:
In August 1944, Hensinger, a B-29 pilot, and his crew were returning from a bombing raid over Yowata, Japan, when their engine caught fire. The crew was forced to bail out. Suffering from only minor injuries, Hensinger used the parachute as a pillow and blanket as he waited to be rescued. He kept the parachute that had saved his life. He later proposed to his girlfriend Ruth in 1947, offering her the material for a gown.

Ruth wanted to create a dress similar to one in the movie Gone with the Wind. She hired a local seamstress, Hilda Buck, to make the bodice and veil. Ruth made the skirt herself; she pulled up the strings on the parachute so that the dress would be shorter in the front and have a train in the back. The couple married July 19, 1947.

New 2011 Postage Prices for Wedding Invitations

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has recently changed the price of stamps that affect many wedding invitations and save the date cards. If you have yet to mail your invitations you should be aware of these new rates. Here's a list of sizes and prices that have changed on April 17th, 2011:

• 1st class, 2 oz - $0.64 (previously $0.61)
• 1st class, 2 oz - odd size* - $0.84 (previously $0.81)
• 1st class, 3 oz - $0.84 (previously $0.78)
• 1st class, 3.5 oz - $1.04 (previously $0.95)
• 1st class, 4 oz - $1.48 (previously $1.39)
• Postcards, 1 oz - $.29 (previously $0.28)

First class 1 oz stamps will remain at $0.44. (See all 2011 postage rates)
*odd-size or non-machineable letters include envelopes with clasps or square envelopes.

Two New Wedding-Themed Stamps
On April 22nd, the post office will also release a new wedding-themed Forever® stamp featuring two white roses. While this is only a $0.44 stamp for one-ounce mail it does provide an additional wedding-themed stamp at face value (the rings stamp has been available since 2009) to the list of available choices. The old $0.61 wedding cake stamp is now a $0.64 stamp.

It's with a heavy heart that I must announce that our BrideTide.com website will be shutting down on May 17th, 2011. The entire submission/voting structure for BrideTide.com is currently based on a platform known as Slinkset and it has recently been announced that it's parent company, Posterous, will be shutting the service down for good. This is something we could never predict and is completely out of our hands. We're just as surprised as you.

So What Happens To All Of The Blog Submissions?
Thankfully, all of the submissions, voting, karma points and member data have been exported and could successfully be reproduced on another platform.

Does This Effect The Top 100 Wedding Blogs?
Absolutely not. The BrideTide brand will continue to be an authoritative voice in the wedding industry and will continue to operate the Top 100 Wedding Blogs, our main BrideTide Blog and our Twitter. We're too obsessed with wedding blogs to ever stop being part of the community :)

So What's Next For BrideTide.com?
Good question. While we fully intend to re-launch BrideTide.com, we feel this may be a great opportunity to implement some popular features that our members have been requesting over the past 2 years. A complete overhaul has been suggested and the brainstorming is just beginning. Our goal is to create a new breed of social environment that will be an influential bridal resource to the entire wedding industry. I'll surely share more details as they unfold.

Baker Michelle Wibowo spent 80 hours sculpting this Prince William And Kate Middleton Tribute Cake.

These edible statues are made out of fruit cake covered in apricot jam and has over 20 pounds of marzipan and 10 pounds of icing sugar. The icing was sculpted with details and then airbrushed with colors to make it look more realistic.

The icing’s gone brown and there’s a big crack in the side, but this wedding cake is in pretty good shape – considering it was baked 113 years ago.

Made in 1898, this is the oldest complete wedding cake in the world. There is a noticeable crack in its side due to vibrations from a bomb blast during World War II.

Tests with a syringe have shown the rich fruit cake inside the ornate icing is still moist! Can you believe it!

“What we want wedding companies to do is accept that a wedding should be a celebration of the couple and that obviously includes both brides and grooms. Unfortunately, the feedback from our readers is that grooms are still seen as a bit of an irrelevance by some suppliers." explains Staggered editor Andrew Shanahan.

This is something we can definitely support. Grooms are playing a bigger role in the wedding planning process and it's about time someone declared the groom revolution!

Nope, we're not lying. Legendary rapper, Snoop Dogg, has confirmed that he has written a brand new song titled "Wet" specifically for Prince William.

“When I heard the royal family wanted to have me perform in celebration of Prince William’s marriage, I knew I had to give them a little something,” the rapper said. “‘Wet’ is the perfect anthem for Prince William or any playa to get the club smokin’.” Prince William and Kate Middleton will tie the knot on April 29. For the past couple of years, we have put together an annual list of Top 100 Wedding Blogs that are widely considered to be genuine influencers of where the bridal industry is heading. Some of these wedding blogs dedicate themselves to a specific niche (DIY, Budget, Offbeat, Groom, Eco), while others are boundless in their creative sharing. Some are new, some are old, and some are so cutting-edge, we simply can't ignore them. Although each blog is different, each one of our Top 100 functions with the purpose of motivating, inspiring, relating and educating their audience on everything wedding. When combined, these 100 wedding blogs truly create the pulse of an entire industry.

Creating such a authoritative list falls on the wedding community itself. Each year, we received thousands of emails, blog comments and tweets from people within the bridal scene suggesting who should be included in the upcoming list of the Top 100 Wedding Blogs. There are dozens & dozens of new wedding blogs popping up everyday, so putting each one on our radar is definitely a task we welcome and take seriously.

But we can't do it alone. That's why we need your help.

For the next week or so, we would like to ask the all you planning brides, product vendors, wedding pros, and bridal obsessed to share their favorite wedding blogs that are not currently on our Top 100 list. We want to know which wedding blogs are under-rated, under-featured and unknown to most of the wedding world, but are definitely Top 100 material.

Artist Simon de Boer Breathes Life Into Old Wedding Dresses

Commissioned by artist Simon de Boer, Jonas and Anika created this video for a project entitled ‘Bride.’ The video contains 270 wedding gowns collected all around Europe and showcases the unique story of them using a black backdrop and invisible models.

Portrait Projecting Wedding Ring

Ever see a wedding ring with a built-in slideshow?

From ring creator, Luke Jerram:
In a darkened room, light from a candle or LED passes through the ring to project a series of portraits. A selection of miniature slides were made of different family portraits and inserted into the edge of the ring for projection. The ring was inspired by 19th Century Standhopes.

Working with local jeweler Tamrakar, this ring was created for the wedding of Luke Jerram and Shelina Nanji.

How To Submit Articles To BrideTide

Planning brides and wedding professionals visit BrideTide on a daily basis to keep up with the pulse of the entire wedding industry. Our members submit fresh, user-generated content every hour that constantly updates with newest ideas and the latest bridal inspiration. Members then vote on their favorite submissions which automatically move up towards the top of the home page.

Step One: Register your username

To being submitting your wedding articles to BrideTide you will first need to create a user name. Clicking on the "Register" link at the top right hand corner of the page will open a new page like the one pictured below. Why Is June The Most Popular Wedding Month?

Over the years, the month of June continues to be regarded as the most popular month for celebrating a wedding event. Some say it's because it marks the start of moderate temperatures and reasonable outdoor weather, while others chalk it up to a wider and cheaper array of flowers available during this colorful Summer month.

But why June?
How did June come to be the most popular wedding month?
If we dig deeper, seems practicality may be the driving force behind this modern-day wedding trend.

Harvest
Back in the day, couples often chose to marry in accordance to their peak harvest time. Having a June wedding meant that a possible Summer pregnancy would still be early enough in the season that a wife could help out with manual work during that year's harvest period. It also meant that after a Spring birth, the recovered bride would be in good enough health to assist in the next year's harvest.

Cleanliness
Ever hear of an "annual bath"? We'll apparently a long time ago, regular bathing wasn't exactly considered a necessity and was therefore reserved as a once-a-year event that the that most of the population observed during the last part of May or beginning of June. As expected, right after their "annual bath", many couples decided to tie the knot since each person was probably their most presentable (and less stinky) during this time compared to the upcoming twelve months. Totally makes sense.

The Roman goddess: Juno
Juno was the ancient Roman goddess of marriage, and accordingly, many Romans chose to honor this goddess by having their wedding in June. Many considered this month to be the most favorable time to marry and would be showered with luck and good wishes from the gods above if they did so.

Why Wedding Blogs Are Better Than Wedding Magazines

Today, I'd like to cover a topic that is casually talked about but rarely gets the attention that it deserves. It's a sore subject for some, and I know I'll probably get some interesting feedback for my opinions, but I think the wedding industry owes it to itself to acknowledge the obvious:

Wedding blogs are better for wedding planning than wedding magazine print media.

In the past year, we've seen a few of our favorite (and very popular) traditional wedding magazines close their doors due to various reasons. Lack of advertising interest, supply price increases and loss of readership are definitely factors in their demise, but the main catalyst in each case is the shying away of print media by today's planning brides. And for good reason. The wedding industry is a constantly evolving environment that caters to a very targeted niche. When the majority of that targeted audience demands something, the industry should take note and work to satisfy that want.

Today's planning bride are significantly different from the brides of yesterday. The DIY bride movement is in full force and the dedication to tradition is evolving into new traditions. Personalization of a wedding is the new standard and brides are eager to find fresh inspiration to fuel their unique creativity. The industry took note, and along came wedding blogs to fill the void of delayed inspiration.

In 2002, there were less than 15K total blogs on the Internet. In 2009, that number was 27 million. Each offering a personal view on a broad topic. And within all those blogs, the wedding industry was lucky enough to inspire a collection of wedding blogs that, for awhile, unknowingly and effectively advanced the wedding industry to the next level. Inspiration and advice was now readily available 24/7 and most importantly, it was free. No longer did a bride have to wait for the next issue of their favorite wedding mag to be delivered or show up on grocery store rack to motivate their planning process. Wedding blogs were just a click away and she knew it was just a matter of minutes before brand new inspiration or advice could be found. The delayed inspiration problem had been solved.

Where print media left off, wedding blogs took over. Both magazines and blogs provide bridal information to brides, but wedding blogs do it more effectively. How so?

Wedding blogs are constantly updated. And just as important, they can easily be edited after publish. Adding on extra information once created is a luxury that every blog has. Being able to include continuous updates or findings inside a post is a direct reflection of blogs supplying the most up-to-date information to it's intended audience. Fresh info is good info.

Wedding blogs are cutting-edge and diverse. Rock n' roll brides, vintage brides, eco-brides, budget-conscious brides and every other bride can usually find a wedding blog that speaks directly to them. Wedding magazines try their best to cover each category with broad stroke articles but usually fall short. Niche specific wedding blogs allow a personal touch that won't be found in mainstream print media. Individual opinions and reviews are what fuel these category wedding blogs.

Wedding blogs are interactive. You can't comment on a print article. You can't express your opinion and instantly share it with others. It's a one-way street when dealing with wedding magazines. They decide what they think their subscribers will like and ship it to your door once a month. Not satisfied, simply wait another month and try your luck. Or, you could just do a little research and find a wedding blog that consistently delivers relevant information that you can use. And that takes me to my next point:

Wedding blogs allow sharing. If you find a cool wedding project or picture that you want your best friend or bridesmaid in another city to check out, simply email to them. Or Facebook them. Or tweet them. Within a few minutes, you can share you finding and get the feedback you want. Unless your friend has the exact wedding magazine in their hand as you do, it would be pretty hard to share that info instantly. Planning brides love efficiency.

Wedding blogs make finding information easy. Instead of tearing out pages of a magazine and storing them in a folder or box, you can just bookmark the exact blog post that you want saved and access that information at a later time. Oh, and the blog post might even be updated when you get back to it! Planning brides love organization.

Wedding blogs lead to other relevant resources. When blogs link to other bridal references, they instantly create a seamless path of information. One blog post may lead to another, then lead to a different blog and then ultimately provide a wealth of knowledge and inspiration to the reader. There are no links in magazines. No opportunity to delve further into a topic.

Wedding blogs are personal. Most wedding bloggers often includes links to their other sites, projects or products, enabling interested readers to pursue deeper relationships with that person/blog. A system of familiarity forms and a blog quickly becomes much more than just written advice and photos. It becomes trustworthy. It becomes a daily visit to a familiar place. Reader loyalty is what separates a good wedding blog from a great wedding blog.

Wedding blogs are free. Almost every single wedding blog on the Internet today is totally free from any subscription fees, renewal notices or annual billing. Wedding bloggers don't charge their audience for their interest in their blog. The information is shared with the intention of allowing visibility to every single person who visits their site, free of charge. This is a completely different business model from print media. Instead of relying on paid subscriptions, blogs rely on creating consistent content and building their audience the to create their value. There is no risk to the reader since there are no monetary barriers to cross.

So there it is. My personal opinion on why wedding blogs will continue to create the pulse of the entire wedding industry and how they are straight-forward better than traditional print media for helping today's bride plan her wedding. While a part of me was excited to write this post, a part of me was hesitant because I wanted in no way to dilute all the positive things that wedding magazines have done for our industry. It's simply a new era and it's time to acknowledge that wedding blogs are the chosen medium for the bride of 2010.
